Be careful to buy beads online (9 posts) - Posted On : 28 Dec 2007 02:37 AM Edit Post | Report Spam
I buy all my beads online. Of course, I mainly use seed beads. I`ve been burned a time or two and it`s painful. But I have a few that I buy from regularly and I not only get a good deal, I get good quality seed beads.

Once you have a few vendors that you establish a good customer relationship with, it won`t be so difficult.

Sorry you had a bad experience though. That`s hard.

We are getting these ready for our website. We are pretty excited about them They are saguaro cactus ribs that we hadn`t done anything with so now they are walking/hiking sticks with burn/carvings.

I think it`s important to add here: ANY website usually takes up to a year to get the first sale! That`s a full year of promoting and advertising. Fortunately, there are ad sites and gallery sites, (like DTL here) that will allow you to do that for free or next to nothing.
Listing just a handful of items on any sale/free ad site will increase your search engine recognition. And that`s where it begins. Then the customer base will come.

So don`t ANYONE give up! There are millions and millions of people out there that can`t draw a smiley face, that can`t wire wrap a stone, that can`t make a hook on a head pin, can`t tear paper for a card or knit a stitch!

and THEY are looking for us!

Your work is just lovely! Welcome to this site as well!

As for tips, I can tell you that displaying your work here and other places like Crafter`s Buzz will keep your name and site out there. Also posting in forums helps tremendously! Try googling your own site and see what you find.

Also try listing your items in places like Craig`s list and Backpage and so on. My website get`s lots of hits from all these free places!

Good fortune to you !

Having a website means lots of work to get your search engine ratings up there. Study lots of key words and submit to lots of free ads. You can not realistically expect to make more than an occasional sale for the first year or a little longer.

We hosted other artists in our snail mail catalogue with great success. We are willing to do that with our website too and we will..... when we get our ratings up. It wouldn`t be fair to invite or accept an artist before we have good search ratings.

I spend as much and more time on the computer submitting free ads as I do creating anything else.

But you can do it and I encourage you! Just be prepared to make it a labor of love with a lot of patience.

Blessings,
Snow
Who sells on ETSY? (66 posts) - Posted On : 14 Dec 2006 11:26 AM Edit Post | Report Spam
We recently decided to get more serious about Etsy. After a lot of study on the site we decided to go with a "specialized" shop. We have and will have mostly table linens and beaded glassware in our store.

Why don`t you look at one of the corsages I have listed here. We make them with wire and embroidery floss, but I think the same technique could apply. We also incorporate ribbon into the floss.
They are not sharp and present no "poking" hazards. email me and I`ll be glad to share the technique with you.

How do you promote your craft? (7 posts) - Posted On : 11 Dec 2006 01:30 PM Edit Post | Report Spam
I drop business cards everywhere they will allow it. I always leave one with the tip at a resteraunt too. I have free ads listed everywhere that takes them, including Backpage, Craig`s list, windows Expo Live etc.

I use my website as my signature line in email. I also use media mail post cards once a year - that brought in tons of business for our old mail order catalogue business and will be doing that again for our website.

We wear the jewelry to encourage comments and hand them cards. We also have a craft sale in our front yard regularly.
We use many of our items as gifts such as Secret Santa. We always attach a card or two with them.

We are hosting a large craftshow in our area this spring. That should also boost our sales.

These things all generate views on your website.

Hope this helps!

As I posted on the mosquito..... I KNEW that was you! That was the first ever mag on wire that I ever bought and it was your items that inspired me to try to learn this art.
I am sure I am not the only one, so thanks from all of us that your art has touched!

Congrats and I can`t wait for the next issue!

Jewelry Display Ideas (21 posts) - Posted On : 20 Nov 2006 08:59 AM Edit Post | Report Spam
I have seen the rice platter displays used with pendants a lot! I think they are so pretty and interesting that way!

I also have a wrought iron cross with a lot of filigree patterning. I hang things from it too. Sister made me a nice block of wood it "pegs" into. After the show, it goes back on the wall. Great for simple necklaces with matching earrings.

Very creative ideas here from all of you!

bstoopman, thank you! Yes, Pampered Chef is a market home party sales thing. Like Tupperware of such.

Ok so you run your own party much the same way! You know, I just never thought of doing that. I will have to make some considerations about having one.

thanks again for the info!

Ya`ll are a treasure trove of info! Thanks for sharing so willingly!

Tell me more about house parties.... Do you just approach friends and family and set a date for it? Like a Pampered Chef party?
How well do you? I mean, I often will give a relative something because ... well, they are relatives! Do you have to solicit their help to get attendants to the party?

I have never once done this and I am totally interested in learning the hardware construction of doing one.

Ag! I hate to be a wetblanket because I just love this site...

I think the option to sell is great but I think the fee is too steep for me. When I consider other sites that sell, (Etsy would be one familiar to most here so I will use it for an example) the listing fees are cheap (will be .20 next week) and the commission is 3.25%. and other sites that are a little higher but not nearly as high as what you have stated.

So I personally would only use the free display option because my website is easily found to purchase from there. If the fees were in range of the ones I already use, like Etsy, I would be happy to sign up for that though!

My income is fixed and my crafts pay for my car insurance and such.... I am sure that I am not the only one that is in this kind of a situation where 15.00 can make such a noticeable impact on the wallet.

Call me the Devil`s Advocate is you must but that is the reality of my life and so many other`s like me.

Blessings,
Snow

This is Elvis. He is not supposed to be on the couch. But I had just left and he was very upset that he didn`t get to go and was mooning over my leaving. Sis snapped this of him crying out the window.
